Canada, recognized for its high standard of living, particularly appeals to Indian international students considering study abroad opportunities. According to the OECD, the average Canadian household boasts a net disposable income of USD $34,421 annually, surpassing the OECD average of USD $30,490. Additionally, Canada's average life expectancy of 82 years exceeds the OECD average by one year. With 31 universities ranked among the world's best, Canada offers Indian students a high-quality education. Obtaining a student visa enables Indian students to access these institutions and benefit from Canada's renowned educational resources and overall quality of life.
Canada attracts a significant number of international students, including those from India, due to its affordable living costs and high-quality education. While developed countries like Switzerland and Singapore have higher Cost-of-Living indexes of 123 and 83, respectively, Canada maintains a more economical index of 70. Additionally, Canada offers relatively lower tuition fees compared to other countries; for instance, undergraduate programs in the United States range from $23,000 to $80,000 annually, while in Canada, they range from $15,000 to $60,000 annually. Obtaining a student visa allows Indian students to take advantage of these cost-effective educational opportunities and access top universities in Canada. For those seeking overseas education, Canada stands out as a top destination.
The Canadian government permits Indian international students studying abroad to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week during their academic semesters and full-time for up to 40 hours per week during semester breaks, such as summer and winter. This opportunity significantly assists international students, including Indian students, in covering their living expenses and potentially financing their education or student loans. Obtaining a student visa enables Indian students to benefit from these work opportunities while pursuing their studies in Canada. This makes Canada a favorable destination for overseas education, offering both academic and financial advantages.
Studying abroad in Canada offers Indian international students significant work opportunities through the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). Upon completion of their educational program, students are eligible to receive this special work permit, which is valid for 1 to 3 years, depending on the duration of their program. This permit is particularly advantageous as it does not require a job offer for application, allowing students to gain valuable work experience in Canada without the hurdles typically faced by those applying for work permits from outside the country. Obtaining a student visa enables Indian students to access these post-graduate work opportunities, further enriching their educational experience in Canada.

College admissions are only part of the challenge; the real test lies in applying for and successfully obtaining a Canadian student visa. The Canadian government is known for its stringent scrutiny when granting student visas, and recent changes in laws have made it harder to secure a visa.
This is where an expert can be invaluable, as thorough preparation and complete documentation are crucial. Any fault in documentation can easily lead to visa rejection. It is essential that candidates have all necessary documents and a perfect Statement of Purpose (SOP). Given the absence of a mandatory student visa interview, documentation is all the Canadian government has to judge your application.
To avoid even the minutest mistakes, consulting a visa expert for help in preparing and filing for a Canadian student visa is highly recommended.
As of February 15, 2024, the Government of Canada implemented changes to the post-graduation work permit program (PGWP). Students who have completed a master’s degree program, even under two years, will now qualify for a 3-year PGWP, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria.
However, starting September 1, 2024, students enrolled in curriculum licensing agreement programs will no longer be eligible for a PGWP. In addition, the special measures for distance learning and PGWP validity have been extended until August 31, 2024.
A post-graduation work permit is an open work permit granted to foreign students upon completion of their studies in Canada. PGWP holders are free to work anywhere in Canada for any employer for as many hours as they like. The length of your PGWP depends on the level and duration of your study program, as well as the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first.
You may be eligible for a PGWP if you graduated from a designated learning institution (DLI) and want to stay in Canada temporarily to work. A DLI is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government in Canada to host international students. Graduation from a DLI doesn’t automatically make you eligible for a PGWP. Check the DLI list to find out which schools have eligible programs.
Graduates of programs that are at least two years in length at PGWP-eligible designated learning institutions are eligible for a 3-year PGWP, as are graduates of master’s degree programs less than 2 years in length.
If your program was less than 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials)
You aren’t eligible for a PGWP. If your program was at least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials). You can apply for a 3-year PGWP, even if the length of your master’s degree was less than 2 years, as long as you meet all other eligibility criteria.
This does not apply to certificate or diploma programs.
Applicants are permitted to work in Canada while awaiting the processing of their PGWP, given that they submitted their application before the expiration of their student permit. There is a 180-day window within which you must apply for your PGWP from the date you finish your study program.
You can now apply for a PGWP from abroad if you leave Canada after completing your education.
