There are two ways of giving the IELTS Exam

Best IELTS Coaching in Vadodara

Pen-and-Paper IELTS

  1. Format: The traditional pen-and-paper format involves test-takers using physical test booklets and answer sheets.
  2. Listening: Test-takers listen to recorded materials played through speakers and answer on the question paper.
  3. Reading: Reading passages are printed in the test booklet, and test-takers write their answers directly on the answer sheet.
  4. Writing: Writing tasks are completed by hand, with test-takers writing their responses in the provided answer booklet.
  5. Speaking: The speaking test remains face-to-face with an examiner.

Advantages:

  • Familiarity: Many test-takers are accustomed to pen-and-paper exams, making this format more comfortable for some.
  • No Technical Issues: Since it doesn't rely on technology, there's a lower risk of technical problems disrupting the exam.

Disadvantages:

  • Longer Waiting Time for Results: Results for pen-and-paper tests typically take around 13 days to be available.
  • Handwriting Skills: Legible handwriting is essential, and some test-takers may find it challenging to write quickly and neatly for extended periods.

Computer-Based IELTS

  1. Format: In the computer-based IELTS, all sections of the test are completed using a computer interface.
  2. Listening: Test-takers listen to recorded materials through headphones and answer questions on the computer. They can take notes on the provided scratch paper.
  3. Reading: Similarly, test-takers read passages on the computer screen and answer questions by selecting the correct answers or typing responses.
  4. Writing: Writing tasks are completed using a word processor on the computer. Test-takers type their responses directly onto the screen.
  5. Speaking: The speaking test remains face-to-face with an examiner. However, some centers may have the speaking test conducted on a different day from the other sections.

Advantages:

  • Instant Results: Results for the computer-based IELTS are typically available faster, usually within 5 to 7 days after completing the test.
  • Typing Skills: For those comfortable with typing, the computer-based format allows for faster writing and editing during the writing section.

Disadvantages:

  • Technical Issues: Test-takers must be familiar with using a computer, including basic functions like typing and navigating interfaces. Technical glitches, though rare, can occur.
  • Limited Availability: Not all test centers offer the computer-based option, so availability might be limited depending on location.

Validity of the IELTS Exam

The validity of the IELTS exam refers to the duration for which the test results are considered valid by institutions and organizations that require proof of English language proficiency. The validity period of the IELTS exam results is typically two years from the date of the test. During this time, test-takers can submit their IELTS scores to universities, employers, immigration authorities, and other institutions as evidence of their English language proficiency.
